Recommended WordPress Plugins for 2011

Community driven, open source development is one of the main advantages of WordPress. Millions of people are using it, and as such programmers actively develop and update very useful plugins, that can enhance a WordPress powered website.

What is a WordPress Plugin?

WordPress, by itself, is a Content Management System. It gets the job done safely, and is very stable, but the standard installation lacks unique, specific functions that some webmasters might require.

WordPress plugins fill this gap. They are aimed at providing a method of getting something done, or enhancing a core functionality of WordPress. Best of all, the WordPress developer community develops most of these plugins for free. Of course, there are a couple of very specific, premium plugins which have to be purchased, but you can find a free plugin for basically any task you can think of.

Here is the list of free plugins we recommend you install on your WordPress-MyBandTheme powered site.

  1. All in one SEO Pack
Automatically optimizes your site word search engines, with the ability to carry out many custom functions as well.
  2. Google XML Sitemaps
Search engines can use XML sitemaps to navigate your website and index all of your pages. This plugin creates an XML sitemap of your entire website automatically.
  3. LJ Longtail SEO
This is a fairly unknown plugin, but it is very useful. It basically recognizes visitors sent to your site by search engines, analyzes the keyword they found your website with, and if the keyword is on the 2nd or 3rd page of the search engine result pages, the plugin will place that keyword linking to your most relevant page into a widget (which you have to place on your sidebar). The result of this is that you can increase the ranking of keywords that are almost on page one, by site-wide linking to them.
This, of course, is only useful if you have a lot of search engine visitors. If not, than you won’t need to install this plugin.
  4. SEO Smart Links
This plugin helps automate the internal linking of your website, which is useful for search engines, as well as your visitors. It will automatically link keywords in your content, and you can define keywords to link as well.
  5. WordPress Tweaks
This is another under-rated, yet very useful plugin. It allows you to tweak several aspects of WordPress.
  6. WP-Num-Captcha
If you allow commenting on your site, you need to enable some sort of spam filter. This plugin, has worked well for us, but you may need to install more captcha plugins if you get many spam comments, such as WP Captcha-Free.
  7. WP No Category Base
By default, WordPress adds the word “category” to your URL structure, when you view a post in a category. This is very annoying, as it disrupts the clean URL structure, and can be removed with this plugin.
  8. Yet Another Related Post Plugin
After a visitor reads your content and gets to the bottom of a post where does he/she go? This plugin automatically inserts related posts at the bottom of every post, so your visitors can read on and won’t leave your site. This is also good for search engines, as it creates a related hub of posts on your site.
  9. Google Analytics for WordPress
If you want to see where your visitors are coming from, and what they are doing on your site, you need to install this plugin and sign up for a free Google Analytics account.

These are the plugins we really recommend you install with your copy of the MyBandTheme band template for WordPress. If you use any other plugins and feel that it would be useful for others as well, please feel free to share in the comment section below.
